Stage 20 sees the Beacon of Harmony travel from a joint celebration in Oxford between Harmony InSpires and The Barberettes, to Woodley, Berkshire for an evening with The Barberettes and Arun Sounds.
Here’s what The Barberettes had to say about their time with the Beacon:
On Saturday 23rd April, we were joined by 13 ladies from Arun Sounds – including their MD Madeleine Branson – who traveled to Woodley from Bognor Regis to receive the Beacon of Harmony from us. Unfortunately, busy roads due to a European Rugby Champions Cup match in Reading, and Sat Navs taking some of the ladies via the scenic route, caused a few travel hitches, but they eventually arrived and were welcomed by our Chairman Linda Baugh with much appreciated cups of tea and coffee. Then while they sipped their drinks and recovered from their journey we sang a few songs to them – Skyfall and Happy/All about the Bass and brought smiles to their faces with some entertaining moves.
Both choruses managed to squeeze onto the risers to take part in some fun vocal warm-ups led by the Barberettes MD Emma Lelliott before singing ‘Let me be There’ and ‘Lazy days’. There were a number of ladies from the two choruses who knew ‘Heart of my hearts’ and sang this together while the rest of us enjoyed their performance.
It’s always daunting singing in front of other choruses, but even more so when there are a smaller number of you, but Arun Sounds happily took to the risers and performed a couple of songs for us which we thoroughly enjoyed. We also had a real treat when the quartet Tektonix took to the floor to sing.
Both choruses returned to the risers to learn the LABBS 40th birthday tag running through it a few times before being confident enough to sing it without crib sheets and then recording it for posterity.
Of course, no meeting of like minded ladies can take place without tea and cake, so no better way of ending a lovely afternoon, but by the cutting and sharing of the 40th Anniversary cake before finally handing over of the scroll to Arun Sounds for the next stage of its journey and wishing our visitors a safe journey home.
It was a great afternoon of fun, music and friendship with other ladies who share our passion for singing. We now have some ‘new’ friends to look out for at convention.
